I’ve just finished my new portfolio website, I’ve gone for a clear & simple design. I’ll probably slowly move all work related stuff over to the new website & keep this one as my personal blog. Check out my new site here & let me know what you think:

Moulin Créatif web design & development

Why have I decided on a new domain rather then reworking this site? There’s a couple of simple reasons:

I’m going to start working more in France – Believe it or not, even though I live in France & speak French fluently I’ve only worked with say 2-3 French clients. I’ve chosen a French name (easier to remember for French clients) & made the site available in both languages.

I like fresh starts, there’s nothing like a blank canvas for creativity and I feel this site has become a bit too messy lately being a blog, addon shop & work base. A fresh start will also give me a chance to see what I can do with my rankings on a new domain. I’m no expert in seo so hopefully I’ll have a chance to learn some new techniques.

What do you think? I’ve kept it simple using only a few jQuery effects (jQuery is wicked!). Let me know what you think & if you notice any errors

Since the update to 3.0 my iPhone has decided it doesn’t want to work properly anymore… Quite a few other people are having problems with the update too by the look of things

My iPhone will now last only a few hours if I use it, when before I could get a good day & a half use out of it. Oh and it won’t charge anymore either (well sometimes it will). Will Apple fix the problem? I damn hope so otherwise I’ll be getting rid of it without any regrets… I’ve already been looking for it’s replacement and the HTC Hero seems like a decent phone.

The only current solution seems to be (apart from re-installing the update which I’ve done 10+ times) disable the wifi, 3G, push notifications, email fetching (set it to manual), lower the brightness… Why don’t we just turn the damn phone off? Seriously if the solution is to disable everything that makes it such a smart, connected phone then is there any point keeping it on?

Don’t get me wrong I love my iPhone usually but this update has really p*ssed me off and over the past week I’ve really started to think about sticking it on eBay.

Anyone else having these problems?

I’ve now been hosted with JaguarPC for just over a year, what can I say? I should have moved here years ago! I currently have 2 VPS with them and I can’t say I remember ever having the slightest problem with them. No noticeable downtime (uptime monitored with mon.itor.us), no hardware issues, nothing.

When I did use their support tickets (because I had some questions about Plesk as it was the first time I use it) they replied quick! As in from what I saw in my support tickets each reply was within 10-30 minutes.

Also because I checked out their forum first I found the special deals they have regularly. I think when I signed up I managed to get double the RAM +5GB disk space and free plesk control panel, how cool is that?

So if you’re looking for a new host be it VPS, Dedicated or reseller hosting then be sure to check these guys out! They also have a nice twist on the “unlimited” shared plan so many hosts rip you off on by not actually offering unlimited anything (which would be impossible anyway). If you need lots of disk space then they offer endless disk space! How does that work? Every time you get to 80% of your allowed disk space just click a button to extend it!

Anyway it’s time I got back to work, just thought I’d share my experience over the past year. Hopefully you’ll be able to receive the great service I’ve had since being with them.

I’ve been happily using Linux now for over a year and thought I’d post about my experiences so far and after the what happened to me (more on that in a bit) I’ll probably be creating a new category to store useful bits as I find them (for myself & hopefully it will be helpful to others).

Anyway other the last weekend I’ve been able to try out a new Linux distribution, opensuse 11.1. I thought I’d try it out as after starting up my laptop saturday morning I had a sudden partition not found error. So after downloading and going through the LiveCD installation process which is great & easy to use like Ubuntu’s or the many others out there everything was setup. I copied over the files from backups and was all set (or so I thought).

I’d chosen the KDE for my Desktop as it looked snazzy and I liked the idea of the plasmoids, etc.. available but it turned out to be a big hassle First I installed the nvidia drivers so I could setup my monitors correctly, this went great. Next up download some of those cool plasmoids I’d seen on the web, start compiling….. error no cmake. So I install cmake, new error (can’t remember what exactly but something else was missing). Now that was up and running I started adding my little plasmoids & setting up my desktop and everything how I wanted. Boom, screen blanks out and reappears, an alert window pops up warning me that something in KDE just crashed.

Anyway all these little things put me off trying any further. There’s nothing wrong with either openSuse or KDE, I was just unlucky & time was too short to get used to the new KDE shortcuts

So I went back to looking into what was wrong on the existing Linux install and found it out it was quite straight forward. After a bit of fooling around editing a few things in menu.lst which had somehow set themselves back to a previous copy (thus causing the problem).

Anyway I’m back now on Linux Mint which I’ve been on for a few months now, I think after all this I’ll be moving back to Ubuntu (what originally got me into Linux) when Jaunty is out in 20 or so days from now as it’s looking quite interesting.

Beta testing for the latest & greatest PHPmotion has recently started, limited to a select few forum members & the moderators. Hopefully this means that the public release isn’t far away. So all of you who have been patiently waiting (and impatiently for some…), your wait is nearly over!

Personally I haven’t been able to look through v3 yet from lack of spare time. I did start installing it until I found out my cgi-bin wasn’t correctly configured and I had to get back to work, so it’ll have to wait a few days (hopefully not too long because I want to have a good look round). But I did get a quick look through the admin and it’s a huge improvement as you could probably tell from the screenshots on the forum.

Anyway, once I’m finished installing it I’ll be able to let you know what I think & don’t worry I’ve already come up with a few ideas for addons which will help make your site even cooler (but I’m not saying what just yet )!

Anyway I’ve been really busy with clients hence the lack of posts, hopefully I’ll be working more or less for one client (also a good friend now ) so I’ll be on more normal work hours and will have spare time to do other things apart from working like blogging & going out.

Hopefully one day phpmotion v3 will be released and I’ll be able to get working on some interesting themes & plugins for it. It was announced in the official thread that it would be in less then a month, fingers crossed everyone will soon be able to test out this new release.

That’s all for now folks!

After getting bored with the old look which I created for the site a year ago day for day, I only just noticed this when I uploaded the new theme. I decided I wanted a new look but unfortunately having hardly any spare time at the moment I decided to work off of an existing theme.

K2

Possibly the best free theme (that I’ve seen anyway) for Wordpress, after seeing it in action on their site getK2.com I decided that this was definitely the one for me. Not only does it look great by default and come with great features (try out the search box or “older posts” links on the home page), it also comes with an options page allowing easy configuration from within the admin area.

Basically what you see here is the result of an hour or so messing about and a few lines of code (you’d be surprised how little need be done to achieve big changes. I’ve kept the clean look which K2 already has and just made a few minor changes to make it some what different to every other K2 user.

Anyway I’m not sure that it’s permanent I may if I get time create my own from scratch but for now I’m happy with it.

Oh and I’m also going to be working on some new stuff for PHPmotion, possibly some themes, new addons & tutorials.. Don’t forget to check back often.
