Don’t upgrade to PHPmotion V3 just yet!

Recently the beta upgrade from v2 to v3 was released, after taking a look I noticed that it didn’t update any of the urls (at least I didn’t see anything that did). Basically if you upgrade your live site now then you risk losing your indexed links.

This is possibly the worst thing you’d want to happen to your established site, except from maybe the server dieing and not having backups (you do have backups, right?).

I’ve got in touch with the developers to see what they say, it was probably just a moment of forgetfulness on their behalf. Good thing I’ve got my eyes open heh ;)

Anyway the solution would be to use 301 redirects for all the existing links to the new ones. If you know how to put these in place then prepare to do it once you’ve upgraded so you don’t lose your hard work!

As for those using the seo pack, their link solution (if they provide one) won’t work for your sites as the links are already rewritten. I will be providing custom solutions depending on your seo pack settings so you don’t lose any links, you just need to get in touch with me. You can contact me through my portfolio site here. If you decide that it’s not a problem losing links then you can upgrade as normal without any problems.

It’s best to contact me before upgrading though as the link redirections need to be put in place as soon as possible so the search engines don’t get a chance to spider the site.

New portfolio website

I’ve just finished my new portfolio website, I’ve gone for a clear & simple design. I’ll probably slowly move all work related stuff over to the new website & keep this one as my personal blog. Check out my new site here & let me know what you think:

Moulin Créatif web design & development

Why have I decided on a new domain rather then reworking this site? There’s a couple of simple reasons:

  • I’m going to start working more in France – Believe it or not, even though I live in France & speak French fluently I’ve only worked with say 2-3 French clients. I’ve chosen a French name (easier to remember for French clients) & made the site available in both languages.
  • I like fresh starts, there’s nothing like a blank canvas for creativity and I feel this site has become a bit too messy lately being a blog, addon shop & work base. A fresh start will also give me a chance to see what I can do with my rankings on a new domain. I’m no expert in seo so hopefully I’ll have a chance to learn some new techniques.

What do you think? I’ve kept it simple using only a few jQuery effects (jQuery is wicked!). Let me know what you think & if you notice any errors ;)
